Clerk Cuts Off IRS Scam; Counterfeit Cash At Coffee Shop: Blotter

Incidents and arrests from the Northbrook Police Department blotter from Aug. 2 to Aug. 8.

NORTHBROOK, IL — The following information comes from the Northbrook Police Department as a record of incidents reported to the police and those arrested on criminal charges, which represent accusations that are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Everyone arrested is presumed to be innocent unless found guilty in court beyond a reasonable doubt.

  • A Koepke Road resident came into the station around 12:30 a.m. on Aug. 3 to report they had purchased two tickets on Craiglist to Lollapalooza but never received them.
  • A Cherry Lane resident came to the station around 11:42 a.m. on Aug. 4 to report that they had provided someone with their banking information while entering into a loan agreement, but the check they were given wound up bouncing.
  • A Landwehr Road resident reported around noon on Aug. 6 they had gotten a call from someone purporting to be an IRS employee demanding $1,000 in the form of gift cards in order to pay a supposed debt. When the resident went to a local store, the clerk let them know it was most likely a scam. There was no loss.

THEFTS

  • A resident of a senior living facility in the 200 block of Skokie Boulevard reported at 11:15 a.m. on Aug. 4 that someone had stolen cash from inside a wallet in their dresser.
  • A resident of the 1200 block of Hillside Road reported at 3:51 p.m. on Aug. 6 they had noticed they were missing various pieces of jewelry.
  • A resident of the 500 block of Dunsten Circle reported at 5:53 p.m. on Aug. 6 they had lost their wallet while shopping at an unspecified location. When they checked with their credit card company, they learned their cards had been used to make purchases at several different location.

COUNTERFEIT CURRENCY
An employee of the Starbucks at 1036 Willow Road reported at 8:06 p.m. on Aug. 6 that a woman or girl had used a fake $100 bill to pay for a purchase for an unspecified loss.

CREDIT CARD FRAUD
A Stratford Place resident came into the station on the afternoon of Aug. 7 to report that someone had used their credit card to make unauthorized purchases of plane tickets.

CAR BURGLARIES

  • Two residents in the 2100 block of Clover Road reported prior to 4:30 a.m. on Aug. 8 that someone had gotten into their cars. Nothing was reported missing in one case, while a wallet was stolen in the other.
  • A resident in the 3100 block of Kay Jay Drive reported at 4:46 a.m. on Aug. 8 that someone had stolen a backpack from a car that had been left unlocked.
  • An employee of Reliance Plumbing, Sewar and Drainage at 1848 Techny Court reported shortly before 7 a.m. on Aug 8 that someone had broken into two vehicles and a trailer and stole a camera, and possible other items.
  • An employee of Cardenas Landscaping at 400 Anthony Trail reported that someone got into two of the company's trailers between 9:53 and 10:35 p.m. on Aug. 7 and stole various landscaping items.
  • A resident in the 2500 block of Joshua Lane reported that someone stole a cell phone from an unlocked car between 7:15 a.m. on Aug. 7 and 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 8.


ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Archie Morris, 71, of the 200 block of Lake Boulevard in Buffalo Grove, was arrested at 8:50 p.m. on Aug. 4 and charged with driving under the influence following a traffic stop near the intersection of Dundee Trail and Anthony Road. He was also cited for no proof of insurance, improper lane usage and disobeying a traffic control device.

Rafael Breton Martinez, 22, of the 1700 block of Greenwood Road in Glenview, was arrested at 4:25 a.m. on Aug. 4 following a traffic stop in the 2800 block of Shannon Road and charged with driving under the influence. He was also issued citations for disobeying a traffic signal and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

Brenda A. Ramirez Balbuena, 22, of the 9900 block of Linda Lane in Des Plaines, was arrested at 4:38 a.m. on Aug. 4 near the intersection of Willow Road and Lexington Lane and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. She was also issued citations for improper lane usage and and improper turn.

A 29-year-old McHenry woman was arrested at 4:15 p.m. on Aug. 6 following a traffic stop near the intersection of Laburnum Drive and Dundee Road and charged with driving with a suspended license. She was also cited for using a cell phone while driving and not having proof of insurance.

Timothy J. Haraldsen, 41, of the 2600 block of West Estes Avenue in Chicago, was arrested at an unspecified time and place on a Northbrook-issued warrant in connection with a March 2017 retail theft incident. Detectives identified Haraldsen as the person who shoplifted from the REI at 888 Willow Road.
