Fake ComEd Caller Demands Gift Cards, Fake Grandson Bail: Blotter

Northbrook Police Department Blotter: Aug. 9 - Aug. 15

NORTHBROOK, IL — The following information comes from the Northbrook Police Department as a record of incidents reported to the police and those arrested on criminal charges, which represent accusations that are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Everyone arrested is presumed to be innocent unless found guilty in court beyond a reasonable doubt.

INCIDENTS

RETAIL THEFT
Staff at the Northbrook Court Macy's reported shortly after 8 p.m. on Aug. 9 that two women or girls stole unspecified merchandise from department store at the 1555 Lake Cook Road.

GRANDSON SCAM
A Founders Road resident reported on the afternoon of Aug. 10 that someone had called claiming to be their grandson. The caller claimed to need bond money after an arrest. After the resident got money from the bank and mailed it to the address provided, their purported grandson stopped picking up the phone.

  • A Mount Vernon Terrace resident reported on the morning of Aug. 11 that someone had used their credit information to make several unauthorized purchases.
  • An Eskin Drive resident reported on the afternoon of Aug. 13 that someone had used their personal information to open up an account with a cellular service provider.
  • A Williamsburg Drive resident reported on the evening of Aug. 15 that someone had used their personal information to make an unauthorized purchase of a car.

CAR BURGLARIES

  • Side windows were smashed and property was stolen from three cars on the 1100 block of Sanders Road prior to the evening of Aug. 13.
  • Someone broke a rear driver's side window to a car parked in the 1400 block of Maple Avenue and stole cash and other property.

RETAIL THEFT
A staffer at an unspecified store in the 100 block of Skokie Boulevard reported around 9 p.m. on Aug. 13 that a man or boy had stolen several unspecified items from the store.

CHECK SCAM
A Basswood Drive resident reported on the morning of Aug. 14 that someone sent them a fraudulent check for the purchase and shipping of an item offered for sale online.

ELECTRICITY SCAM
A Peachtree Lane resident reported on the morning of Aug. 14 that someone had called them up claiming to be from ComEd and threatened to turn off the resident's electricity unless a payment of was made using about $500 worth of prepaid gift cards. The resident refused and there was no loss associated with the report.

VEHICULAR TRESPASSING
Police were told at 2:28 p.m. on Aug. 15 that someone entered two cars parked in the 100 block of Skokie Boulevard without permission. One of the cars was damaged.

THEFT
A resident in the 2200 block of Brentwood Road reported that someone stole two traffic cones which had been placed at the end of their driveway.


ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Michael W. Schultz, Jr., 31, of the 1100 block of Ash Court in Manteno, was arrested at 10:06 p.m. on Aug. 9 on an active arrest warrant issued by Bureau County following a traffic stop near the intersection of Western Avenue and Cherry Lane. Police pulled him over for using a cell phone while driving, checked his name and discovered the warrant.

Miguel Ochoa, 23, of the 6400 block of South Troy Street in Chicago, was arrested at 1:48 p.m. on Aug. 15 in the 1100 block of Greenbriar Lane on an arrest warrant issued by Will County. Officers were investigating something else when they learned he had an active warrant.

Michael J. Larkin, 20, of the 5700 block of West Lawrence Avenue in Chicago, was arrested at 8:10 p.m. on Aug. 15 in the 1300 block of Shermer Road on two Lake County warrants. Police were called to a report of a disturbance and learned of the active arrest warrants from the sheriff's office.
