Lew Blond Memorial Run Raises Over $25K For ALS Research In Northbrook
The 23rd annual run/walk, in honor of a former teacher who died of ALS in 2000, was recently held at Maple School.

NORTHBROOK, IL — Thanks to the efforts of 600 runners and the local community, more than $25,000 was recently raised for ALS research at the 23rd annual Lew Blond Memorial Run/Walk. The May 18 event was held at Maple School.
The annual race honors Lew Blond, a former Maple School applied technology teacher, who died from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a progressive disease of the nervous system also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, in 2000.
According to Northbrook/Glenview School District 30, funds were raised through race proceeds, as well as a silent auction of items donated by local businesses and residents. In addition to the 5K run, there was a one-mile run/walk and the Little Lew 50-yard dash for ages 0-6.

Organizers said dozens of volunteers, sponsors and spectators cheered the runners during a morning that included a performance by the Maple Jazz Band, a live DJ, photo opportunities, vendor fair and appearances by the mascots from Maple, Willowbrook and Wescott schools in Northbrook/Glenview School District 30.
"It is incredible to see so many community members supporting this important cause and keeping Lew Blond’s legacy alive as we fight ALS," said Sam Kurtz, Maple principal and Lew Blond Run executive director, said.
The majority of the event's proceeds over the years have been donated to the Les Turner ALS Foundation ALS to help support research efforts, and to the Stuart Rosen Transportation Fund.
In addition, proceeds are used to help support scholarships for District 30 alumni at Glenbrook North and Glenbrook South high schools pursuing the applied sciences, as well as for special projects at Northbrook/Glenview School District 30.
