Meadowbrook 5th Grader Wins National Award
Kate Rassin placed fifth in essay competition on building a stock portfolio.

Meadowbrook School fifth-grader Kate Rassin placed fifth nationally in the elementary division of InvestWrite, a national essay competition judged by financial professionals.
Rassin and other students in Jessica Mann’s advanced mathematics class participated in The Stock Market Game, a yearlong simulation involving students working in teams to create stock portfolios.

At the conclusion of the simulation, students wrote essays and submitted them to InvestWrite, sponsored by Econ Illinois. Rassin’s essay used a super hero character, Volatile Victoria, to describe the perils of making unwise financial decisions.
On Tuesday, Debbie Kerman, of Econ Illinois, presented Rassin with a certificate, medal and $100 gift card for a future investment.

Mann showed she was impressed with Rassin and all students in this year’s class.
“I’m sure there will be some very successful financial professionals among this group,” she said.
