Mosquitoes With West Nile Virus Found in Northbrook
This marks the 8th North Shore community to report finding the illness-carrying insects this year.

Northbrook, IL—Mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus have been discovered in Northbrook, according to the the North Shore Mosquito Abatement District.
Two batches of mosquitoes found in traps Tuesday, July 5, tested positive for the disease Wednesday, July 6, the district said in a statement released Friday.
This is the eighth North Shore community where West Nile-positive mosquitoes have been discovered. Disease-carrying insects also have been found in Glenview, Evanston, Kenilworth, Wilmette, Winnetka, Skokie and Morton Grove.

So far, there only has been one reported case of a human contracting the West Nile virus in 2016. An adolescent in west-central Illinois became seriously ill with the disease in late May.

Last year, Illinois had 77 reported human cases of West Nile virus, and nine people died from the illness, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.
The state health agency advises people to stay away from areas where mosquitoes breed, such as standing water in flowerpots, bird baths and ponds. Also, residents should use insect repellent with DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR 3535.
