No Injuries As Floor Collapses In Northbrook House Fire

Firefighters were pulled out of the burning house as part of the home's first floor began collapsing into the basement, the chief said.

NORTHBROOK, IL — Fire crews had to be pulled out of a burning Northbrook house Friday after the first floor began to collapse into the basement, according to fire officials. No firefighters or residents were injured in the incident.

Shortly after 7 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to a house in the 3100 block of Doriann Drive. They arrived seven minutes alter to find heavy smoke billowing out of the home's front door, according to Northbrook Fire Chief Andy Carlson.

The home's residents had left before emergency personnel arrived, he said, and firefighters were told the fire started in the basement. Fire crews began making their way through heavy smoke on the ground floor.

"Upon entering the basement, dense smoke and high heat conditions made it very difficult to reach the seat of the fire," Carlson said. "After a few minutes, the rear portion of the first floor began to collapse into the basement and crews were pulled out to fight the fire defensively from the outside."

The Northbrook Fire Department received assistance from the Glenview and Wheeling fire departments, according to Carlson. No other properties were affected by the fire.

The bulk of the fire was extinguished by 10:30 a.m., Carlson said. Investigators remained on scene as of 4 p.m., and he said a crew would stay through Friday evening monitoring for possible hot spots.
