Sextortion Scams On The Rise Through Social Media: Northbrook PD
Police said the scams are mostly occurring over the social media platforms Snapchat and Instagram.
NORTHBROOK, IL — With a rise in cases nationally, the Northbrook Police Department is warning residents to be aware of sextortion scams, with most occurring on social media platforms like Snapchat and Instagram. Sextortion is a threat made by an individual saying they will publicly expose the victim's explicit photos and videos unless the victim pays money.
"Please begin a dialogue with those close to you due to this being a sensitive topic," Northbrook police said. "Many individuals may feel ashamed or embarrassed, but let them know that there is support."

In addition, the University of Chicago released the following tips for how to protect yourself:

- Recognize the Signs — Be wary of unsolicited friend requests or messages, especially if they quickly turn intimate.
- Report and Block — If you receive a sextortion threat, do not respond. Report the user to the platform and block them immediately.
- Seek Help — Contact local authorities or a trusted organization for support. Remember, you are not alone.
