At St. Norbert School, The Community Is Their Classroom

At St. Norbert School, every classroom extended into the local community and beyond this Christmas season. It was a busy December as teachers designed lessons, classroom projects, and field trips that helped students learn about compassion, generosity, and the world around them.

Our Preschool students collected mittens and hats for Catholic Charities of Chicago to distribute to the needy this winter. Another Preschool class walked to the nearby Dollar Tree store and purchased gifts to donate to the Salvation Army Toy Drive held at Northbrook Village Hall. Our Kindergarten through Second graders made Christmas cards for the sick and homebound in our community. Students in Third through Fifth grades volunteered at Feed My Starving Children, packaging nutritious meals for families all around the world. Finally, our Middle Schoolers worked in small groups to complete different service projects serving Orphans of the Storm Animal Shelter, Salvation Army Toy Drive, Project Linus, Holy Cross Free Store, St. Norbert and Our Lady of the Brook Parish, and Project Night-Night.

In addition to these volunteer and service activities, St. Norbert School students opened their eyes to different world traditions this holiday season. Most notably, students helped prepare for the celebration of Simbang Gabi, a special Filipino Christmas Mass, held at St. Norbert and Our Lady of the Brook Parish on December, 17. St. Norbert School students learned about Filipino culture in art class, and they even made clay parols,traditional star shaped lanterns, to decorate the church. A couple of St. Norbert students were given the honor of carrying a parol during the procession into Mass. It was a joy for all to see.

The Christmas season is not the only time students learn and serve in the community. Each class works to complete several service projects throughout the year, a beloved part of the St. Norbert School mission to encourage students to engage with the community and see the true value of a kind heart.
