NORTHBROOK, IL — A recent school-wide effort at Northbrook's Wescott School raised more than $2,600 to benefit the American Red Cross Central Florida's efforts to rebuild the Sunshine State following Hurricane Ian. Students rotated shifts at a drive-thru lemonade stand, which was located at the school's circle drive.

According to the district, Wescott's Helping Hands committee, comprised of teacher volunteers, spearheaded the effort. Supporters of the event were able to drive up for their cool drink.

In their downtime, the students also wrote chalk messages of support to Florida.

"This plan could not have been executed in less than a week without everyone’s help," said first-grade teacher Sharon Latek, who co-chairs the Helping Hands Committee with fourth-grade teacher Courtney Sislow. "The students were able to make signs, collect donations and be a part of making a positive difference in the world. The lemonade stand really complimented our school theme, 'Kindness begins with me.'"
