Gun found after cops smell cannabis; DUI charges follow driver assist calls: Northbrook Police Department blotter, March 30 to April 12

NORTHBROOK, IL — The following information comes from the Northbrook Police Department as a record of incidents reported to the police and those arrested on criminal charges, which represent accusations by the state and are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Everyone arrested is presumed to be innocent unless found guilty in court beyond a reasonable doubt.

INCIDENTS

SHOPLIFTING

  • Staff at the Nordstrom Rack, 199 Skokie Blvd., reported around 4:15 p.m. on March 29 that two unidentified female shoplifters stole various pieces of athletic apparel.
  • Staff at the Dick's Sporting Goods, 275 Skokie Blvd., reported at 10 a.m. on March 31 that a male shoplifter had just stolen a baseball glove
  • Staff at the Northbrook Court Apple Store reported around 7 p.m. on April 10 that three female shoplifters stole four Apple watches.

SUSPICIOUS CALL
An Acorn Lane resident reported on the afternoon of March 29 that someone had called claiming to be from the Illinois State Police. Drugs had been found in a car rented in the resident's name, the caller claimed. The purported police representative asked the resident to wire money or risk arrest.

ILLEGAL DUMPING
A resident in the 1800 block of Raymond Drive reported at 2:15 p.m. on March 30 that they had learned that someone was "continually" abandoning "products" on their property without permission.

HOME BURGLARY
A resident in the 3600 block of Pebble Beach Road reported around 2:40 a.m. on March 31 that had discovered someone had disturbed the interior of their home. It was not known if anything was stolen at the time of the report.

CAR BURGLARY ATTEMPT
A shopper at the Mariano's, 784 Skokie Blvd., reported at 3:20 p.m. on March 31 that someone had damaged the driver's side handle of their vehicle while they were shopping.

IDENTITY THEFT
A Shermer Road resident reported on the afternoon of April 1 that someone had used their identity for tax purposes.

CREDIT CARD FRAUD
Someone used the credit card of a company on Academy Drive to make an unauthorized fuel purchase, police were told around 12:30 p.m. on April 2.

THEFT
Someone stole an air compressor from a construction site in the area of Lee and Dundee roads, police were told around 4 p.m. on April 5.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE
Someone "broke a picnic table" in the 1500 block of Shermer Road sometime prior to 10 a.m. on April 9, police were told.

SCAM ATTEMPT
A Lake Knoll Drive resident reported on the morning of April 10 that someone had sent them an email that threatened to release personal information if the resident did not turn over $1,400 worth of Bitcoin. The resident was told it was a scam and no money was sent.

ONLINE FRAUD
A Valencia Drive resident reported around 4 p.m. on April 10 that they had sent money out of state to buy something online but never received the item and were unable to contact the seller.

CREDIT CARD FRAUD
A Dell Road resident reported on the morning of April 11 that someone had made an unauthorized purchase on their credit card account.

FRAUD
A Meadow Road resident reported on the afternoon of April 11 that they discovered what they believed was a fraudulent charge on their bank account.

ARRESTS

Joseph W. Hary, 23, of the 6000 block of North Forest Glen Avenue, Chicago, and Michael A. Neumeyer, 23, of the 6200 block of North Sauganash Avenue, Chicago, were arrested around 7 p.m. on March 31 in the 1700 Tudor Lane after police were called over a report of two unrecognized people in the neighborhood in a parked car. Officers reported finding several pills, THC-infused food and a small bag of suspected marijuana. They were charged with felony possession of a under 30 grams of a controlled substance over the pills and issued local ordinance citations for possession of cannabis.

Lymarita I. Cheeks, 25, of the 3800 block of North 77th Street, Milwaukee, Tyler S. Hendon-Latiker, 20, of the 4500 block of West Fon Du Lac, Milwaukee, and Finnesse T. Battle, 21, of the 5900 block of North 60th Street, Milwaukee, were arrested at 6:37 p.m. on March 31 following a traffic stop in the area of Lake Cook and Wilmont roads. An officer reported noticing their vehicle matched the description of one used by shoplifting suspects during a March 27 incident at the Northbrook Court Macy's. After pulling it over, the officer learned the driver, Cheeks, had a suspended Wisconsin driver's license and the vehicle's registration was suspended. The officer recognized two of the three women in the car from the previous case. A search of the car turned up thousands of dollars worth of merchandise which police learned had just been stolen from several stores in South Barrington. All three were charged with felony retail theft.

Mukesh Reddy, 43, of the 2500 block of Essex Drive, Northbrook, was arrested around 8:45 p.m. on April 1 in the area of Shermer and Techny roads and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after officers were dispatched to the area for a report of an erratic driver and witnessed him violate traffic laws. He was also issued a citation for an improper lane change.

A 37-year-old Northbrook man was arrested at 3:18 p.m. on April 2 after an officer who knew he had a revoked license recognized him driving a car in the area of Second Street and Techny Road.

A 20-year-old Skokie man was arrested at 12:10 a.m. on April 3 following a traffic stop in the area of Dundee and Portwine roads. He was charged with driving without a valid driver's license and issued an improper lane usage ticket.

A 69-year-old Chicago man was arrested at 8:23 p.m. on April 3 and charged with driving with a revoked license after he was pulled over for an equipment violation in the area of Dundee and Laurel roads. He was also issued a citation for not having a working rear license plate light.

Daisy M. Ortiz, 24, of the 200 block of 7th Street, Wheeling, was arrested around 6:30 p.m. on April 4 and charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon following a traffic stop in the area of Founders Drive and Waukegan Road. A patrolling officer pulled over a vehicle for an unspecified equipment violation and reported smelling burnt marijuana in the vehicle while speaking to the driver. The driver and a passenger were asked to step outside, and police found a handgun and a sock with ammunition inside during a search of the passenger. Neither the driver nor passenger were permitted to carry a firearm. The Cook County State's Attorney's Office approved a single felony count following the incident.

James T. Gibson, 23, of the 2100 block of South Indiana Avenue, Chicago, was arrested around 1 a.m. on April 5 and charged with driving under the influence, unlawful possession of a controlled stanced and driving an uninsured vehicle with expired registration. He was also issued citations for illegal parking and illegal transportation of an open container of alcohol after officers were dispatched to the area of Skokie Boulevard and Sunset Ridge Road for a report of a possibly disabled vehicle and determined the driver was DUI and had an open container of alcohol and an unspecified illegal substance in the vehicle.

Gordon C. Cormack, 57, of the 11400 block of Richard Place, Beach Park, was arrested around 8:30 p.m. on April 5 and charged with driving under the influence and without insurance after officers responded to a crash with property damage in the area of Sanders and Dundee roads and determined the driver of one of the vehicles was impaired. Cormack was also issued citations for illegal transportation of an open container of alcohol and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Anna M. Gabris, 25, of the 1600 block of Wedgewood Drive, Gurnee, was arrested around 12:30 p.m. on April 6 following a traffic stop in the area of Willow and Pfingsten roads. An officer responding to a report of an erratic driver pulled over Gabris and learned she had five outstanding warrants from Kane, Kendall and Lake counties.

Robert A. McClellan, 25, of the 500 block of Voltz Road, Northbrook, was arrested at 9:13 p.m. on April 7 and charged with driving under the influence and without insurance after officers were dispatched to a call for motorist assist in the 600 block of Voltz Road, located the vehicle in question and determined the driver was impaired. McClellan was also issued a citation for improper lane usage.

A 36-year-old North Chicago man was arrested around 1:30 p.m. on April 10 and charged with driving an uninsured motor vehicle with a suspended license after an officer responded to a report of a minor traffic crash and learned one of the drivers' license was suspended.
