Best Selling Author Heather MacLean Visits Bremen HS

MacLean spoke about her new novel Toward a Secret Sky and shared her life experiences with students

NY Times best-selling author, Heather MacLean, recently visited Bremen High School. MacLean came to the Bremen Instructional Media Center (IMC) through a partnership with Anderson’s Bookshop. She spoke briefly about her new novel, Toward a Secret Sky, and also shared her life experiences with the Bremen
students. The students were fortunate to hear the story of her life where she insisted, “You hold the pen to your life story, choose the parts you want to hang onto and you can edit the rest. You are the hero in your story and can always write a new ending.” MacLean shared her own story of a difficult childhood where she often retreated into reading and looked to escape her home through education. She saw that as a “way out.” MacLean emphasized the importance of patience and perseverance in everything she has achieved. She encouraged the students to look at their lives through the lens of possibility and not to attach to their current set of circumstances in life. In fact, with all of her experiences, MacLean kept growing and changing and is an example of a person being the author/editor of her own life. MacLean went to Princeton University, graduated with a Physics degree and worked in the business field for 15 years. She was able to use her writing skills on a more technical level and still does some technical/science writing. “After MacLean’s presentation, several students tried to come back for the next hour, even though they had class. It was truly one of the most inspirational talks I have experienced in 25 years of education!” said Mrs. Mary Rose Bernas, District 228 IMC Supervisor.
