Oak Forest HS Students Collect Shoes for 'Share Your Soles'
OFHS World Language Honor Society collected hundreds of pairs of shoes to donate
The Oak Forest High School World Language Honor Society and its Sponsor Ms. Amanda Brown, sponsored a gently used shoe drive to benefit a Chicagoland charity called “Share Your Soles.” OFHS students and staff collected hundreds of pairs of shoes to donate.
“Share Your Soles” was founded by Mona Purdy in 1999. She was traveling in South America and noticed a group of kids painting tar on their bare feet so that they could run a race. An American orthopedic surgeon told her that if these children had shoes to wear, there would be a lot less need for him to regularly travel to the region to perform amputations of children’s infected limbs. When Mona got home, she visited schools and shared what she had seen and asked for donated shoes. Since that time, “Share Your Soles” has brought over one million pairs of shoes to impoverished people throughout the world.

At Oak Forest High School, World Language Honor Society members collected shoes in the front lobby both before and after school during the week. They also collected shoes in Mrs. Amanda Brown’s room. Students received a receipt that they could turn in to OFHS teachers for extra credit.
