Orland Park Man Makes Fake 911 Call Claiming Acquaintance Spit on Car: Prosecutor

Prosecutor said man filed false report against acquaintance who had him arrested on disorderly conduct charge.

OAK FOREST, IL -- An Orland Park resident is accused to making a phony 911 report that someone spit on his car in a parking lot in Oak Forest, prosecutors said Wednesday in court.

According to the charges, police went to Jewel, 5616 W. 159th St., Oak Forest, around 4:19 p.m. Nov. 8 after the caller had reported damage to his vehicle. When police arrived, a man identified as Charles Durkin, 31, showed up alleging that a man with whom he had a run-in earlier in the day had spit on his car.

The prosecutor said officers examined the store’s security video, which did not show anyone spitting on Durkin’s car. Durkin allegedly refused to make a statement to police, He had also been arrested that same morning on a misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge.

The assistant public defender told the judge that she had doubts whether Durkin had placed the call.

“I’m not convinced,” she said. “He called the [police] non-emergency number, not 9-1-1.”

“The police could have gotten into an accident answering the call, assuming you’re not guilty,” Judge Felice said.

The judge released Durkin on a $25,000 I-bond and placed him on electronic home monitoring. He’s also to have no contact with this other person. Durkin’s next court hearing is Nov. 30 in Bridgeview.
