Preakness Stakes 2017: Cloud Computing Wins In Major Upset

Ten horses ran the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore on Saturday, May 20.

BALTIMORE, MD — There will not be a Triple Crown winner in 2017. Despite being the favorite, Always Dreaming did not win the Preakness Stakes on Saturday.

"...he put so much into the [Kentucky] Derby that it wasn’t meant to be," Always Dreaming's trainer Todd Pletcher said. "He ran so hard in the Derby, and today just wasn’t his day."

Cloud Computing stole the show at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, winning the second jewel of the Triple Crown in what was just the fourth race of his career. He finished the 1 and 3/16-mile race around the dirt track, which was listed as muddy, with a time of 1:55.98.

Competing in the 142nd Preakness Stakes were Always Dreaming, Classic Empire, Cloud Computing, Conquest Mo Money, Gunnevara, Hence, Lookin at Lee, Multiplier, Senior Investment and Term of Art.

Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming was the favorite, with Classic Empire the second most favored to win the race, according to organizers, who said early odds and post positions were as follows:

Post 1: Multiplier; 24-1
Post 2: Cloud Computing; 19-1
Post 3: Hence; 30-1
Post 4: Always Dreaming; 4-5
Post 5: Classic Empire; 5-2
Post 6: Gunnevera; 10-1
Post 7: Term of Art; 60-1

Post 9: Lookin At Lee; 10-1
Post 10: Conquest Mo Money; 12-1

Always Dreaming was attempting to secure the second jewel in the Triple Crown before the Belmont Stakes on June 10.

The race and Budweiser InfieldFest were expected to attract more than 130,000 fans. Celebrities from actor Kevin Spacey to Patriots coach Bill Belichick were spotted among them.

Country singer Sam Hunt headlined the Budweiser InfieldFest at the Preakness. Hunt is known for hits like "Break Up in a Small Town" and "Leave the Night On."

Good Charlotte, a rock band that formed in Maryland, took to the DeKuyper Stage.

LOCASH, a country pop duo that includes Baltimore native Chris Lucas, also performed, as did Canadian pop-country act High Valley.

Gates opened at 8 a.m. at Pimlico Race Course, 5201 Park Heights Avenue, Baltimore.

EARLIER IN THE WEEK: Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming has been settling into his new digs before this weekend's race.

According to his trainer, Always Dreaming has been in good spirits since his win at Churchill Downs and his arrival at Pimlico on May 6.

"He’s feeling good. He’s high-energy. Eating great. All of those things," trainer Todd Pletcher said in a statement.

"...he came out a little more fired up than he’s been the last few days," Pletcher said Monday, due to the arrival of new horses for other races. "I think he picked up on that little bit of change in atmosphere..."

Several horses running in the Preakness were scheduled to arrive Tuesday.

Competing in the 142nd Preakness Stakes will be Always Dreaming, Classic Empire, Cloud Computing, Conquest Mo Money, Gunnevara, Hence, Lookin at Lee, Multiplier, Senior Investment and Term of Art.

So far, Always Dreaming is the favorite. The official lineup for the race will be determined on Wednesday.

The Preakness Stakes will be broadcast on WBAL-TV, with pre-race coverage starting at 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 20.

Preakness Events

The events leading up to Preakness are underway. Sunrise tours of Pimlico are offered daily through Friday, May 19. They are free and run continuously from 6–9 a.m.

A pre-Preakness party is taking place at Mt. Washington Tavern from 7–11 p.m. on Wednesday, May 17.

The Preakness Balloon Festival will be Thursday, May 18, to Saturday, May 20, at the Howard County Fairgrounds. Get ticket information.

The Preakness Stakes is Saturday, May 20. The race and Budweiser InfieldFest are expected to attract more than 130,000 fans, according to Preakness organizers.
