Crime & Safety

Back the Blue

When did supporting safe neighborhoods become so controversial?

Cook County state's attorney Kim Foxx announced an indictment for Oak Lawn officer Patrick O’Donnell for the arrest made on a 17-year-old kid who fled a traffic stop with a gun in his bag. I don’t know Officer O’Donnell, but I do know I want our law enforcement officers to pursue anyone who poses a threat to where my daughter plays, where my family lives and where our communities interact.

The idea that if you support these ideas that you are a racist or fascist has infected the minds of people in our society who willfully ignore accountability in our youth. Is this not an extreme position, to let our youth continue to misbehave without consequence? Why is there a faction of our society who believes this is acceptable? Why aren’t we asking, “why does this kid have a gun” or “Where are these kids' parents”?

While Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx indicts officers, we find out that she reduces charges of illegal possession of a firearm so known criminals can walk the streets in the name of equity and inclusion! This decision led to the death of another Chicago police officer, Andres Vasquez-Lasso, who left behind a young family. If there is any irony in comparing these situations is that our state's attorney finds it more valuable to arrest cops than obtain criminals, so she can appease a base who doesn’t recognize their own extremism.

Jesus famously said, “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?” Does this not hit the nail on the head when it comes to the progressive wing who screams foul against police yet ignores the constant environment of crime in our youth today in the name of equity and inclusion?

On April 6th there is another scheduled meeting of the fire and police commission meeting at Oak Lawn Village Hall on April 5. I encourage everyone to attend and let the men and women of the Oak Lawn Police Department who sacrifice their time to make sure we can spend time with our loved ones that we appreciate them.
