Buzz Killing Cops Arrest 14 Drunk Drivers in Fourth of July DUI Crackdown

Oak Lawn police write 155 tickets for DUI, seat belt, cell phone yakking and other violations during holiday crackdown.

OAK LAWN, IL -- Oak Lawn police made 14 drunk driving arrests during the DUI crackdown over the Fourth of July holiday.

In addition, the Oak Lawn Police Department issued 141 seat belt citations were issued, 79 of which occurred during the nighttime hours.

Another 184 citations were written for various other infractions, including using a cell phone while behind the wheel.

National statistics show that one person was killed every 53 seconds in the United States in the year 2014, or 9,967 drunk-driving fatalities.

“These enforcement crackdowns are vital because too many people are not heeding the message, drunk driving is deadly and illegal,” said Sgt. M. Acke of the Oak Lawn Police Department. “Alcohol not only dangerously impairs your driving skills, it impairs your judgement. Anytime you see a friend drinking alcohol, make sure they don’t plan to drive home.”

Oak Lawn police joined forces with other law enforcement agencies and highway safety partners throughout the state in the Illinois Independence Day “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” crackdown.

The crackdown, part of the statewide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Click It or Ticket” campaigns, was funded by federal traffic safety funds through the Illinois Department of Transportation.
