Hospital Shooting Update: Rockford Man Was Fatally Shot After Scuffle
The Chicago man charged in the fatal shooting outside of Christ Hospital was currently out on bond for felony resisting, prosecutor said.

OAK LAWN, IL — The Chicago man accused in the fatal shooting outside Advocate Aurora Christ Medical Center early Saturday morning got into a shoving match with a Rockford man before shooting him in the parking lot across from the emergency room entrance where a large crowd had gathered, prosecutors said. Marques Rose, 36, appeared Sunday before Cook County Judge Barbara Dawkins on a first degree murder charge at the Leighton Criminal Court Building.
Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney Leonore Carlson said that members of a car social club had gathered near 87th and Green Streets, when a club member was shot just before 1 a.m. Dec. 3. The club member suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he later died.
A second person at 87th and Green was also shot in the chest and was taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park, where he was pronounced dead a short time later, according to information from Chicago police.

Carlson said that Rose and 28-year-old Brandon McGee, of Rockford, got into an argument. Rose shoved McGee, and McGee hit Rose, knocking him to the ground, according to the charges
When Rose got up off the ground, he and McGee continued talking but failed to resolve their argument. The prosecutor said Rose walked away and McGee walked away as well. Rose returned several minutes later to the crowd, walking between two vehicles in the parking lot and shooting McGee in the head, the prosecutor said.
At 2:11 a.m., Oak Lawn police heard a gunshot and ran toward the crowd, where they found McGee with a gunshot wound to the head. McGee was immediately rushed into the ER, where he died later Saturday.
Witnesses pointed to Rose as he walked away from the crowd, holding the gun, the prosecutor said. Officers walked toward Rose and ordered him to stop, when Rose is alleged to have fled on foot as officers chased after him. The prosecutor said officers saw Rose toss a gun underneath a car during the pursuit. Eventually officers caught up with Rose and placed him under arrest on suspicion of shooting the Rockford man.
Officers found a .38-caliber revolver with three shell casings in the cylinder underneath the car. Carlson said three witnesses identified Rose as the alleged shooter in a photo lineup. Rose’s hands are also said to have tested positive for the presence of gunshot residue. The prosecutor said surveillance video corroborated the witnesses’ statements to police.
The prosecutor told the judge that Rose is currently out on bond for felony aggravated resisting of a police officer. Rose also has five felony convictions for possession of a controlled substance in 2017, possession of a stolen motor vehicle in 2007, and two residential burglary convictions from 2003 and 2004. Rose also has six bond forfeitures. She asked that Rose be held without bail in accordance with state statutes.
Assistant Public Defender Sam Dixon said that Rose made it through the 10th grade and eventually earned his GED. He is employed full-time at his family's security company and suffers from seizures.
“He has no money to post,” Dixon said. “Most of his criminal history is quite old.”
Judge Dawkins granted a violation of bail bond on the pending case and ordered Rose to be held without bail until an appearance before a judge on Dec. 5.
“I am noting the fact … that the victim is alleged to have shoved the defendant, notwithstanding, there was a cooling off period where these two separated and there was a retreat,” Judge Dawkins said. “A shove, if there was a shove, and being shot with a firearm, those are not equal power.”
Given witnesses identifying Rose in photo arrays and hospital video surveillance corroborating witnesses’ accounts, and the amount of evidence early in the case, she ordered Rose to be held without bail based upon the allegations and potential natural life sentence should he be convicted.
Rose set to appear Dec. 6 at 9:30 a.m. in Room 103 at the Bridgeview Courthouse.
