OAK LAWN, IL — When given the praise of being one the team’s best defenders, a ton of responsibility comes with it. As one of the top defenders for the Oak Lawn Community High School girls basketball team, Lamia Quinones’ responsibility was to open the season by guarding one of the premier scorers in the area and maybe the state.

She locked in, and gave a great performance, holding Lyons Township’s leading scorer to just six points in the season-opening game. Then, she took care of business at the other end of the floor for the Spartans and scored 14 points of her own, going 4-of-5 from the floor and 6-of-7 at the free-throw line.

“Lamia was outstanding in our first game of the season against one of the best teams in the state,” OLCHS head coach Mark Sevedge said. “Lamia gave so much effort into chasing her around and not allowing her to get any space to shoot the ball. So far, Lamia has been one of our top two defenders and is willing to guard our opponent’s best players.

“Only a junior, Lamia is making strides to be one of the best defensive players in the area, and she is continually working to improve as a scoring guard for us as well.”
