Accused Orland Park Walgreens Robber Held Without Bail
"I find him to be a danger," judge says during hearing for high school senior accused of trying to rob a woman inside a Walgreens.

ORLAND PARK, IL -- A high schooler from Park Forest accused of trying a rob a woman at knifepoint inside an Orland Park Walgreens store was ordered detained without bail Wednesday afternoon. Jakhari Carrell, 18, appeared before Cook County Judge Peter Felice on felony charges of attempted armed robbery, aggravated battery and criminal damage to state supported property. His 22-year-old girlfriend, Sylvina Marquez, of Harvey, was charged with misdemeanor obstruction of justice.
The prosecutor said Carrell and Marquez entered the Walgreens at 7960 W. 159th St. in Orland Park at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Carrell walked to the back of the store where he allegedly approached a 43-year-old woman from behind as she shopped for lip balm and cold medicine.
Carrell held a 3-inch folding knife to her throat, the prosecutor said. The woman grabbed the knife blade and began screaming. She suffered a one-inch cut to her finger, police said, and her screams drew the attention of the store manager, who ran to her aid.

The couple were still inside the store when employees called police. As police were arriving, the prosecutor said, Carrell took the knife out of his pocket and handed it to Marquez, who hid the knife in her purse. The woman was able to positively identify Carrell at the scene, according to the charges.

The woman was taken to Palos Community Hospital and treated for a minor laceration to her hand. She was later released. Carrell and Marquez were both brought to the Orland Park police station. While in the holding cell, police said, Carrell was captured on security video digging holes into a mattress, which caused about $500 in damages.
The assistant public defender told the judge Carrell was a senior in high school and is expected to graduate this spring. The charge is his first felony offense as an adult. She asked that Carrell to be placed on electronic monitoring.
“I find him to be a danger,” Felice said, ordering the high school student detained without bail. “An innocent victim shopping sustained a one-inch cut."
The assistant public defender requested an order to preserve all photographic and video evidence.
The prosecutor asked that Carrell not have any contact with the woman while the case is pending. Marquez appeared in court Wednesday morning. She was present in the courtroom for Carrell’s bond hearing. Carrell is due back in court Dec. 11.
“I love you, baby,” Marquez yelled as he was led out of court.
