Coronavirus By The Numbers: Case Counts In South Suburbs

COOK COUNTY, IL — Coronavirus numbers continue to climb in south suburban Cook County, with some municipalities reporting their first cases. The Cook County Public Health Department reports 9,961 confirmed cases across the suburbs, with 423 deaths.

Municipalities in the south suburbs reporting 200 or more COVID-19 cases include: Park Forest (282), Calumet City (236), Oak Lawn (221) and South Holland (203). The virus has also spread to 109 communal settings, such as nursing homes and jails.

Across Illinois, reported coronavirus cases topped 39,934 cases, with 1,688 deaths as of April 23. In Cook County, the death toll rose to 1,125 with 91 additional coronavirus deaths recorded by the Cook County Medical Examiner.

Worth and Bedford Park, which had fewer than five cases each since the beginning of the pandemic, saw sudden surges of coronavirus in their communities this week. Worth reported 25 confirmed cases and Bedford Park posted eight cases.

The following numbers represent cases reported to the Cook County Department of Public Health by mandatory reporters, such as hospitals, public safety officials and health care providers.

The data does NOT include patients who recovered at home after showing COVID-19 symptoms, but weren't tested. Other possible cases are being investigated by health officials.
