Trooper, K-9 Injured In I-55 Crash: Police
The driver was charged with driving too fast for conditions and a Scott's Law violation, according to police.

SUMMIT, IL — A state trooper and a K-9 were injured when a driver struck two squad cars Tuesday on Interstate 55 in the south suburbs, according to police.
The incident occurred around 7:45 a.m. on the northbound interstate in Summit, just south of Harlem Avenue, police said. Two troopers were in their squads on the left shoulder handling a crash with their emergency lights on when a Honda Accord hit the back of one of the squads and sideswiped the other, according to police.
A trooper and their canine partner suffered minor injuries, police said.

The driver, 20-year-old Gabriel S. Owens of Sauk Village, was charged with driving too fast for conditions and a Scott’s Law violation, according to police.
Scott’s Law requires all drivers to move over when approaching an emergency vehicle or any vehicle with its emergency or hazard lights on, police said. Scott’s Law violators face $250 to $10,000 in fines for a first offense, according to police, who said a driver’s license will be suspended for six months to two years for violations resulting in injury to another person.

Tuesday’s collision is the second Scott’s Law incident affecting state police in 2025, authorities said.
