Heather Mack, Accused in Her Mother's Murder, Gives Birth in Bali: Reports

19-year-old from Oak Park accused killer delivered by Caesarian section Tuesday.

The Oak Park teen now on trial in Bali for the bludgeoning death of her mother has given birth to a baby girl, reports Australia’s Herald Sun. Heather Mack’s baby was born early Tuesday evening, the website reports, after Mack was moved from her prison cell to nearby Sanglah hospital.

She delivered by Caesarian section, according to the Herald Sun. Indonesian law allows a mother to stay with her child for two years after giving birth in prison. Mack has said she intends to name the baby Stella.

The baby became the focus of the trial last week when Tommy Schaefer, Mack’s boyfriend and the baby’s father, testified that Sheila von Wiese-Mack threatened to kill the unborn baby after she learned of Mack’s pregnancy.

Schaefer, 21, said an argument ensued, the 62-year-old woman tried to choke him, and then he struck her in the head with a metal bowl. Mack and Schaefer face death by firing squad if convicted.

Mack, 19, interviewed by the Chicago Sun-Times via telephone in February, said she is “petrified.”

“I fear for Stella, my daughter, more than myself,” she said.
