Man Accidentally Shoots Himself At Outback Steakhouse: Police

Hazel Crest man was carrying the gun in his pants when it accidentally discharged, hitting his leg, police said.

ORLAND PARK, IL -- A man accidentally shot himself in the leg with an unholstered gun at an Orland Park restaurant, police said. Charles Washington, 63, of Hazel Crest, is facing a misdemeanor reckless conduct charge. .

Washington was dining at Outback Steakhouse on Dec. 23 and was not carrying his Ruger SR9C 9mm handgun in a holster, police said. According to police, Washington told them he was sitting down at the restaurant with his wife with his gun tucked in his waistband. As he was adjusting the gun in his waistband while preparing to dine with his wife, the gun discharged. Police said the bullet passed through Washington’s thigh and struck the restaurant floor, endangering the safety of other patrons in the restaurant.

A bullet fragment was found in the booth where Washington had been dining with his wife. Washington, of the 17900 block of South Kedzie Avenue, turned himself into Orland Park police on Dec. 30. He was charged with reckless conduct.

Police said that Washington carried a valid conceal-carry license. Washington posted bond and was set to appear in court on Jan. 15.
