Drunken Driver Rescued After Crash into Pond: Police

The 50-year-old Oswego woman was pulled from her car by a deputy before it submerged.

Oswego police performed a New Year’s Day rescue after a woman allegedly driving drunk drove into a retention pond near Washington Street and Stonewater Lane.

Paula Mason, 50, of the 200 block of W. Washington Street, allegedly drove over a retaining wall and into the pond, according Oswego police.

Police arrived on the scene at 1:47 a.m. Friday. A Kendall County Sheriff’s Office deputy swam out to the vehicle where he found Mason trapped inside. The deputy was able to break out the rear window of the vehicle and got her out before the vehicle submerged.

Mason was taken to a hospital where she was treated and released. She was subsequently arrested for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and driving under the influence of alcohol.

A Kendall County deputy and Oswego police officer were treated at a hospital after being immersed in water. They were subsequently released.

Washington Street between Clearwater and Greenview is closed to remove the vehicle from the water.
