The Oswego Police Department is investigating mass emails that were sent out to a Yahoo group of over 300 members. The emails threatened residents of the Southbury subdivision and Southbury Elementary School, police said in a release. Police were notified of the emails the morning of May 24.

The owner of the Yahoo Group account confirmed that the account was hacked and that they did not send out the messages. IP addresses involved were determined to be routing out of California and Amsterdam. The originating account holder has had several accounts accessed abroad over the course of the last several years. School District 308 has been advised of the situation. A criminal investigation is pending regarding the incident.

An email from Southbury Elementary School Principal Lindsay Allen was sent out to parents Sunday, May 24 saying the threats are being taken seriously and district administrators are working closely with the Oswego Police Department.

The school will still open Tuesday, May 26, but with a heightened police presence.

“There will be increased district and police presence around and inside the school on this day,” Allen wrote in an email. “The Oswego Police Department will continue to investigate these threats. If something new should develop, they will meet with district administration immediately to revise the safety plan.”
