PD Offers Self-Defense Class For Oswego Women Graduating High School

The three-hour class is meant to educate and prepare outgoing seniors to be more aware in their everyday lives.

OSWEGO, IL — Oswego police will teach a self-defense class geared toward woman who are graduating from Oswego High School and Oswego East High School this spring.

The course is scheduled to take place from from 2-5 p.m. June 3 at the Oswego Police Department's Public Safety Campus, 3355 Woolley Road. Police said the program is meant to educate and prepare outgoing seniors to "educate and prepare outgoing seniors, whether they are going off to college or entering the workforce, to be more aware in their everyday lives and to have the self-confidence to defend themselves in any environment."

On the day of the training, people participating are asked to wear workout-type clothing and no jewelry. The course includes physical exertion, so police said people with pre-existing injuries should consult their doctors before joining.

The course is limited to 20 participants who need to be at least 16 years old. Similar classes have filled up in the past, officials said Monday.

Applications can be found on the police department's website, and participants will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis.

Participants will be required to sign a waiver of liability ahead of attending, and people under 18 years of age will be required to have a parent or legal guardian also sign the waiver.
