Fremd Bands Celebrate School’s 50th Anniversary

Band benefit dinner and concert held Feb. 13 commemorated school's 50th anniversary with special commissioned musical composition "Exuberance Fastastiques"

The sounds of music filled the Fremd High School cafeteria and auditorium in celebration of the school’s 50th anniversary.

Several student music ensembles entertained more than 400 dinner guests in the cafeteria earlier this week during Fremd Music Association’s (FMA) 9th annual band benefit dinner. FMA is the musical arts volunteer organization at Fremd High School. The benefit raised more than $9,000 which will be used to fund purchases for all areas of the band program next year.

Following the dinner, a concert featuring all 265 band students performing in four symphonic bands was held in the auditorium.

To commemorate the band and school’s 50th anniversary, the music department put together “Fremd Band through the Decades” – a 42 page color booklet filled with band photos from the past to present.

An online magazine and pdf file of the booklet is available at www.d211.org/fremdband

The highlight of the concert was the world premiere of “Exuberance Fastastiques” performed by Fremd’s Wind Symphony.  The piece was written by Roger Cichy and commissioned by FMA for Fremd’s 50th anniversary.

The composition is based on the main melody harmonic structure of the school’s fight song which was adapted from the U.S. Naval Academy’s alma mater “Navy Blue and Gold”.

A video of the Wind Symphony’s performance of the piece is attached to this story.

Additional events have been planned to celebrate Fremd’s 50thbirthday and can be found on the school’s website.
