Should Palatine Block County Policy Forcing Employers to Give Workers 5 Paid Sick Days?

Officials will soon vote on a resolution exempting village businesses from the new Cook County ordinance. But should they pass it?

PALATINE, IL — Village officials are working to make sure a new Cook County measure concerning paid employee sick leave doesn't affect Palatine businesses, according to the Daily Herald.

Next month, the Village Board plans to vote on a resolution that would make private employers exempt from a county ordinance that would require them to provide at least five paid sick days to everyone on their payrolls, the report stated. The new ordinance was passed by the Cook County Board last week and goes into effect next summer, the report added.

Palatine joins other Cook County suburbs, such as Barrington and Mount Prospect, in trying to bypass the ordinance, the report stated. Critics of the paid sick leave measure say it will stunt economic growth in the area, with employers locating their businesses in nearby or bordering counties without such a mandate, the Herald reports.

But supporters of the county policy contend that minimum paid sick leave not only creates healthier workplaces, but it's also something that's a draw for talented professionals, the report added.
