Ten Cook County Residents Die Shoveling Snow: MEDICAL EXAMINER

Most victims were in their 50s and 60s, Cook County Medical Examiner says.

Ten Cook County residents died shoveling snow during the region’s heavy snowfall this past weekend.

Beginning at 6 p.m. Jan. 31 through 11:59 p.m. Feb. 2, the Cook County Medical Examiner reported ten deaths associated with shoveling snow, including one female and nine males in Cook County.

One resident is in his 40s and three were in their 50s. The remaining six residents were in their 60s.

Five victims became medical examiner’s cases, including an Oak Lawn resident and a Riverdale resident. The other three were from Chicago.

The other five cases were released from the medical examiner’s jurisdiction to private physicians.

The medical examiner’s office notes that an elderly person who dies of natural causes, such as a heart attack, and whose physician signs off on his or her death certificate is usually not a medical examiner case.
