In the early morning hours of Oct. 6, the 47-year-old owner of a Mercedes-Benz was stopped at a red light at the intersection of LaGrange Road and 107th Street, when his car was bumped from behind. When he exited his Benz to check for damage, he was boxed in by two vehicles. Three males wearing ski masks jumped out of the two vehicles, brandishing guns, Cook County Sheriff’s Police told Patch.

The trio demanded the man’s keys and cell phone. One of the purported carjackers drove off in the man’s car. The rest fled in the other vehicles, according to sheriff’s police.

Later that afternoon, the stolen Benz was located in Joliet. Police there took a 16-year-old exiting the home. A 15-year-old boy was sitting behind the wheel of the stolen Benz, Joliet police said.

The 15-year-old put the car in drive and attempted to escape by driving around the police vehicles. Police said the teen nearly struck an officer, who discharged his gun but did not hit the fleeing teen.

A chase ensued and the Benz struck another unmarked Joliet police vehicle. Police chased the Benz into the next town, where it struck several other vehicles not involved in the incident. The 15-year-old ran from the car but was quickly apprehended without further incident.

A rifle was recovered from the trunk of the Mercedes-Benz and three more guns were recovered from the Joliet residence. Both teens are being held in a Will County juvenile detention center.
