2nd DUI Arrest In 3 Weeks For Channahon Firefighter-Paramedic

Plainfield police arrested Kurt Liebermann, 36, on driving under the influence charges after getting a reckless driver complaint Monday.

PLAINFIELD, IL — For the second time in three weeks, off-duty Channahon firefighter-paramedic Kurt Liebermann was arrested on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol. Liebermann's latest arrest happened Monday afternoon in Plainfield.

Last week, Patch reported that Liebermann was arrested by the Channahon Police Department after police received a call on Jan. 18 of an intoxicated person at the Lallos Bar & Grill & Family Restaurant off Route 6 and West Reed Street. The caller advised Channahon police that the intoxicated person left in a black pickup truck.

On Tuesday, Plainfield Police Department Commander Anthony Novak told Patch that the following events led to Monday's arrest of Liebermann, who is 36 years old:

  • Around 12:35 p.m., Plainfield police were notified of a reckless driver near Route 59 and Naperville-Plainfield Road. Another motorist had called 911.
  • The 911 dispatchers were told the black 2015 Chevy Silverado truck almost collided with a light pole.

  • A Plainfield officer spotted Liebermann's truck heading north on Route 59 near 143rd Street; the truck had one flat tire and the driver committed several traffic violations before pulling into a business parking lot.
  • After Liebermann got out to assess his truck damage, the Plainfield officer talked with him and made "several observations that led him to believe Liebermann was operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol."
  • Liebermann performed the field sobriety tests and was put under arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol.

  • Plainfield police went through Liebermann's truck and found open alcoholic beverages and two boxes of ammunition.
  • In addition to Plainfield's DUI arrest, Liebermann was charged with being in possession of ammunition with a revoked FOID card.
  • Liebermann was also cited for improper lane usage, illegal transportation of alcohol and unsafe pneumatic tires, according to Plainfield police.

According to Plainfield's police commander, Liebermann, who lives in Channahon, was released on a $3,000 recognizance bond and issued a March 16 court date at the Will County Courthouse in Courtroom 301.

Liebermann also has a Will County Courthouse hearing on March 2 in Courtroom 301 for his DUI arrest by Channahon police from the night of Jan. 18.

Joliet Patch reached out to Channahon Fire Chief John Petrakis for comment about Liebermann's employment status in light of his second DUI arrest in less than a month.

In 2020, the Channahon Fire Protection District posted an announcement on Facebook, thanking Liebermann for 15 years of service at that time.

"Due to the situation you reference being a personnel issue of the fire district, I cannot comment on his current status as an employee or anything pertaining to this matter as it currently under inquiry," Petrakis responded by email on Tuesday afternoon.
