Joliet Drama Guild's 'The Little Mermaid' Closes After Entertaining Summer Run

The curtain fell Sunday on the Joliet Drama Guild's production of Disney's The Little Mermaid, wrapping up a successful summer run that brought audiences under the sea with memorable songs, colorful costumes and the talents of local performers.

Presented at the Bicentennial Park Theater, the musical retold the beloved story of Ariel, a young mermaid who longs to explore the human world despite the wishes of her father, King Triton.

Based on Disney's animated classic and the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, the production featured fan-favorite songs including "Part of Your World," "Under the Sea" and "Kiss the Girl."

Throughout its run from July 24 to July 26 and July 31 to Aug. 2, the cast delivered energetic performances that blended humor, heart and adventure.

The production's vibrant costumes, imaginative set pieces and lively choreography transformed the stage into an underwater kingdom, while musical numbers featuring the full ensemble earned enthusiastic responses from audiences.

Leading the cast, Abriella Caravette portrayed Ariel with determination and curiosity, capturing the character's longing to discover a world beyond the sea. Elliot Krakar delivered a commanding performance as King Triton, while Leah Meeder brought joyous humor to the role of Scuttle.

The supporting cast helped bring the colorful world of Atlantica to life, creating an engaging experience for theatergoers of all ages.

Director Caleb Hand wrote in the production program that his vision for The Little Mermaid was inspired by two longtime passions: 1980s culture and the music of Alan Menken. The production adopted a more human interpretation of the sea creatures, utilizing period-inspired costumes, color choices and the theater's intimate space to create an immersive experience for the audience. He also praised the cast, crew and creative team whose work helped transform the musical from an idea into a finished production.

The production also showcased the work of the many volunteers who contribute behind the scenes, from building sets and designing costumes to operating lights, sound and stage management. Their efforts reflected the community spirit that has long been a hallmark of the Joliet Drama Guild.

For decades, the Guild has provided opportunities for local actors, musicians and theater enthusiasts to participate in live productions while giving area residents access to community theater close to home. This summer's staging of The Little Mermaid continued the tradition, drawing families, Disney fans and supporters of the local arts.

Although Sunday's performance marked the end of the musical's run, the Joliet Drama Guild's season is far from over. The organization is expected to announce additional productions in the coming months as it continues to celebrate live theater and showcase local talent.
