Local Student Headed to American Legion Auxiliary Girls State
Scholarships are available to junior girls for this week-long Patriotism and Leadership Conference held at Eastern Illinois University
Evelyn Gonzalez of Minooka has been selected to attend the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) Illini Girls State. As part of the premier ALA program, Gonzalez will study local, county and state government processes during this seven day nonpartisan political learning experience.
ALA Girls State attendees, known as “citizens,” receive special instruction in parliamentary procedure and organize themselves into two mock political parties. The young women then campaign, hold rallies, debate, and ultimately vote to elect city, county and state officials. Once elected to office, delegates are sworn in and perform their prescribed duties.
More that 500 junior girls from all over Illinois will join Gonzalez June 16-22 at Eastern Illinois University. Scholarships are still available to other interested junior girls in Plainfield.
