McCarthy said she may be the first woman to receive that particular award, but is not the first one to deserve it.
“I think I’m a walking human patchwork of other remarkable, funny women who I have loved and studied over the years,” McCarthy said. “I am only here because Carol Burnett, Jane Curtin, Phyllis Diller, Whoopi Goldberg, Teri Garr, Madeline Kahn, Lucille Ball, Gilda Radner, Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, Diane Keaton, Tracy Ullman, Bette Midler, Lily Tomlin and my mom, Sandy Lynn McCarthy, taught me not to fear being the butt of the joke.”

McCarthy also thanked the people who bought tickets for her movies and watched her now-canceled TV show “Mike and Molly.”
“You are absolutely the single reason I get to keep doing what I love so much. In all honesty, I really can’t ever thank you enough for that.”
