Teens Buy Booze at Plainfield Businesses

Alcohol was sold to teens with underage ID cards at 11 local businesses.

Two teens worked undercover in a police sting to catch businesses selling alcohol to minors.

The 18 year olds visiting businesses late afternoon and early evening Wednesday didn’t even have to resort to using fake identifications to buy booze. Workers at liquor stores, restaurants and bars served teens even though they were carrying identification showing they were under 21.

Police say they observed the teens being served at 11 Plainfield establishments.

“It’s pretty disappointing to see how many businesses sell alcohol to kids, even though they had IDs clearly showing they were underage,” said Detective Sergeant Kevin McQuaid, with the Plainfield Police Department.

The employees at those establishments paid for not carefully screening the identification cards. Workers who sold liquor to the undercover buyers got a $250 fine, according to a police department press release.

Police wage underage alcohol compliance operations with covert teen decoys twice a year. But last week’s operation netted far more than previous checks, McQuaid said.
