1. Rockford BMX owner back on track after robotic heart surgery () — Jake Karau has been volunteering at the Rockford BMX track for more than four decades. His son was born with a hearing disability, so he chose BMX as a sport for him. During a large BMX event, Jake was involved in a collision with an adult rider. He had a brain bleed and a leaking mitral valve. He underwent a robotic heart surgery to repair it.

2. Rockford City Market wraps up regular 2026 season, adds extra date due to weather cancellations () — The last regular City Market of the season was held in downtown Rockford. The event had a new kid's zone and themes this year as well as an incubator space for businesses to try their hand at the market without the full commitment. Three nights of the market had to be cancelled due to weather. Organizers will have one more day and a makeup market in September.

Unemployment rates drop in northern Illinois in July (gazettextra.com) — Rockford's unemployment rate fell to 5% in July, improving from 5.8% in June and 6.2% a year earlier, signaling a strengthening local job market. Nearby counties like Winnebago and Boone also saw declines, while statewide and national unemployment rates edged down as well.

4. Amazon warehouse shooting suspect pleads guilty (mystateline.com) — A Rockford man has been sentenced to seven years in state prison after pleading guilty to possessing a machine gun linked to a 2025 shooting outside the Merch by Amazon warehouse on Shepherd Trail. Rockford Police say officers later pursued and arrested him on Linden Road, while the alleged driver still faces multiple charges and a court date next week.

5. Man stabbed, another injured during fight outside Sterling Walmart (kwqc.com) — A man injured in a stabbing outside the Sterling Walmart was transferred to Rockford for further treatment after first being taken to CGH Medical Center. Sterling police say both men involved were hurt, Walmart stayed open, and investigators are asking witnesses to come forward as charges are still pending.
