The Secret Kitchen invites guests to celebrate Navratri with a delicious vegetarian menu for dining & takeout

Schaumburg's modern Indian flagship opens its table and its kitchen for the nine-night festival of the Divine Feminine, October 11–20

For nine nights each fall, India turns toward the Divine Feminine — lighting lamps, dancing until midnight, and gathering around tables set for celebration. This year, The Secret Kitchen — the Indian Saga (1411 Schaumburg Road, Schaumburg, IL 60193), Chef Aanal Kotak's modern Indian restaurant in Schaumburg, invites the Chicago area to mark Navratri (October 11–20, 2026) with reservations for dine-in celebration and curated takeout for those bringing the festival home.

What Navratri celebrates

Navratri — literally "nine nights" — honors the goddess Durga in nine forms, culminating in Vijayadashami (Dussehra), which falls on October 20 in 2026. Legend holds that Durga was created by the combined power of the gods to defeat the demon Mahishasura, and her nine-night battle is remembered each year as a festival of the triumph of good over evil and the strength of the feminine divine.

Traditions vary by region and household, but common threads run throughout: many observers keep a vegetarian or fasting diet for some or all of the nine days; households and temples build a kalash (sacred vessel) altar on the first morning; each night is associated with a different color, worn in celebration; and evenings fill with garba and dandiya raas, the circular folk dances performed with sticks and swirling skirts that have become Navratri's most recognizable image outside India. The festival closes with Dussehra, marking the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana and, in many communities, large public gatherings and feasts.
