SHOREWOOD, IL — Shorewood police said 36-year-old Plainfield resident Brandon Mills died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after he shot a 28-year-old Plainfield woman he had previously dated. The woman remains hospitalized with multiple gunshot wounds following Monday's late night shooting in the 19700 block of the northeast frontage road.

Shorewood's Deputy Police Chief Jason Barten told Joliet Patch the shootings happened outside the La Quinta hotel. "There was a reason why they were there. None of this happened in a building, and there was not a third party involved.

"There were only two people involved," Barten added.

By Tuesday evening, Shorewood police issued an updated news release announcing that Mills and the woman he shot had previously dated, and the two arrived at the La Quinta hotel in separate vehicles. The woman was with another person, police said.

Mills waited several hours before emerging from his vehicle and confronting his ex-girlfriend in the parking lot where the shooting occurred, Shorewood police said. Mills died from his self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene and the woman is now in stable condition at AMITA Health Saint Joseph Medical Center.

"Her prognosis is good," Barten told Patch late Tuesday morning.

Shorewood police, with help from the Will-Grundy Major Crimes Task Force, continue to investigate the details of the shooting that happened at 10:41 p.m.

Both people who were shot knew each other, and "the shooting appears to be domestically related," Barten's news release stated. "There is no further threat to area residents."

Barten indicated the gun involved in Monday night's shooting was found near Mills' body.

The parking lot shooting is not considered a homicide investigation.

Barten told Patch, "we know who the shooter is."
