Shorewood Sports Clips a Home Run With the Guys

This Shorewood salon caters to men who like sports highlights more than hair highlights.

OK, guys, now it's your turn for a hair cut man-style.

No more froo froo girlie salons. When you need to get a trim, you no longer have to push your way past the flowery curtains and the smelly candles. Now you can grunt and scratch and spit all you want. A new salon for men levels the playing field in the world of hair cuts.

in Shorewood specializes in cuts for men and boys. There is no wax, no curling irons, no coloring foils. You can't get your nails done, and Cosmo isn't on the side table.

Instead, men get what they really want: lots of TVs all tuned in to sports. Girls will not get turned away for a trim, they just do not receive all the fluff and styling they are used to.

"It's like a sports environment," said Jackie Dezee, manager. "We have TVs and just a fun staff."

Also, they are not licensed barbers, so they do not do shaves.

The trademark service is called the MVP. It includes a cut, shampoo, scalp massage, hot face towel, a neck and shoulder massage, and leave-in conditioner. The cost is $23. The basic cut is $17.

With any service, guys can stop in between cuts for a complimentary side and neck trim. Plus, first-time clients receive a free upgrade.

Boys have special pricing. The basic cut, called the varsity, is only $14 for kids. The MVP is $20.

There is a middle-of-the line service called the Triple Play. That includes a cut, shampoo, scalp massage and hot face towel, but does not have the shoulder massage or the leave-in conditioner of the MVP. The Triple Play costs $21 for men and $18 for boys. About 30 percent of the clientele request the Triple Play or the MVP services, Jackie said.

"I think it's appealing for men and boys so they don't have to go to a salon," said Susanne Hummel. She and her husband, Robert, own the Shorewood and Bolingbrook Sports Clip franchises.

"It is almost a mini-spa for men," Robert said.

Sports Clips has been in Shorewood for four years, Robert explained. Jackie said that she really enjoys working in Shorewood because her clients are often younger with families.

"We also enjoy being part of the Shorewood community," Robert said.  "We are members of the Shorewood chamber and particpate in their activities when time allows."

One such activity was the St. Baldrick's Cancer Research fundraiser. Robert said that their team shaved the heads of those who participated. Also, the Shorewood location raised $1,200 for the VFW's Operation Uplink.

Male neat freaks may also like the fact that the store is highly sanitary. Sports Clips has a central vacuum system, as opposed to a dustpan and broom, Jackie said. Also, each client gets a clean equipment pack, which includes the blending comb, barber comb and clipper guard. Each client gets his own sanitized equipment, she explained.

Sports Clips is at 1031 Brook Forrest Drive, near the Buffalo Wild Wings along Route 59. No appointments are necessary. It is a walk-in only salon.

Sports Clips is open every day except Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Year. Their hours are Mondays through Fridays, 9 a.m. to  8 p.m., Saturdays 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Other holidays have shortened hours.

Gift certificates are available, as are Season Tickets, which include six MVP services for the price of six varsity cuts. The cost is $102, with a $30 savings.
