Featured obituary:
Bernie was born in Chicago in 1929 and grew up on the north side of Chicago, attending Lane Tech High School. He was active in Boy Scouts, achieving the level of Eagle Scout, an achievement which he carried with great pride. After attending the University of Chicago and Wilson Junior College, he graduated from University of Illinois with a degree in chemistry. After proudly serving in the Army for two years, he began a distinguished career in the food industry, starting Golden Crown Juice Company with his business partner, Julian Coleman. He led several companies in the food industry and finished his career as President of The Long Company, the owner of Holsum Bread Company.

Bernie is best known for his volunteer public service to the Village of Deerfield with 36 years on the Deerfield Village Board, serving as Mayor from 1969—2001. After moving to Deerfield in 1959, his volunteer career began with the Jaycees where he served as local president and later statewide president. Jaycees was a tremendously active group of young men in Deerfield and is where he and Joan met many of their lifelong friends. While in the Jaycees he founded Deerfield Family Days, the 4th of July celebration now in its 55th year that has continued in Deerfield since 1963.
After serving as a Deerfield Village Trustee for four years, Bernie was elected Mayor in 1969 in a 12-vote victory after staging a write-in campaign just 2 weeks before the election. Known for his strong, visionary leadership during his 8-term, 32-year career as Mayor, he was known for his innovative approaches to Village finances including the pioneering use of Tax Increment Financing (TIF) districts that helped to raise the quality of new commercial development in Deerfield while earning a AAA credit rating.
Long term vision and planning, often absent in municipal government, were his greatest assets and resulted in the successful development of the Lake Cook corridor and the original Sara Lee headquarters property, the redevelopment of downtown Deerfield, the long term solution to frequent flooding in Deerfield and countless other projects. He formed successful partnerships with other governmental bodies in Deerfield that resulted in permanent fixtures like the Patty Turner Center and Deerfield Fire Station at very little cost to the community. In 32 years as Mayor, he worked with only two village managers, two public works directors and a handful of police chiefs, a testament to his leadership style that supported the Village Manager’s role in running the day to day operations of the Village.
When he left office, Deerfield renamed its headquarters, the Bernard Forrest Deerfield Village Hall, an incredible honor which became one of the highlights of his impactful life.
In a lifetime of accomplishment and impact, Bernie was most proud of his family. Bernie is survived by his beloved Joan, his wife and partner of 65 years. They were partners through it all and shared a lifetime of family, community, friendships, adventure and travel that started with the humblest of beginnings when they married in 1953 in California while he was serving in the Army. Bernie and Joan loved to travel especially to Hawaii, Monterey, Marco Island and to their vacation home in Door County, Wisconsin.
Bernie and Joan raised three sons, Kevin (Laura) and Sean (Peggy) of Deerfield and Keith (Niki) of Libertyville. Bernie is also survived by 11 grandchildren; Colleen, Kathleen, Brian, Tara, Shannon, Patrick, Connor, Jesse, Emily, Lauren and Julia who all knew him affectionately as “Gramps”.
The Forrest family would like to express its sincere gratitude to all of the medical professionals that cared for Bernie. He received extraordinarily fine healthcare throughout his adult life from Mayo Clinic and a host of local physicians and specialists. Special thanks to Mike Yraola, Bernie’s caregiver for the last year of his life. Mike’s diligent care allowed Bernie to carry on a more active life with his family and the special bond he had with Bernie was highly valued by all.
We are grateful that the last few months of his life included being able to participate in the Honor Flight to Washington DC, celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary with family and friends, a trip to Door County, many breakfasts at Rhapsody and a date night at Ravinia with Joan.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2018 from 5-8 p.m. at Kelley & Spalding Funeral Home, 1787 Deerfield Rd. Highland Park. The next morning there will be a visitation from 10:00 am until time of memorial service at 11 a.m. also at Kelley & Spalding Funeral Home. Donations may be made in Bernie’s honor to Orphans of the Storm, Patty Turner Center and Honor Flight Chicago.
