12-Year-Old Boy, 2 Teens Charged After Firing On Chicago Cops: Police

The boys face attempted murder and other felony charges stemming from the shooting Monday in the Lawndale neighborhood.

CHICAGO, IL — Three boys — a 12-year-old and two 17-year-olds — face attempted murder and other felony charges after allegedly opening fire on Chicago police earlier this week on the Southwest Side, authorities said. No officers were hurt in the shooting, which happened just after 8 p.m. Monday in the 3100 block of West 13th Street in the Lawndale neighborhood, Chicago police said in a statement announcing the charges early Wednesday.

According to police, the boys were arrested Monday in the 3700 block of South Pulaski Road, near the Stevenson Expressway, following a brief chase shortly after the shooting. The suspects are accused of opening fire on the officers from a stolen vehicle that had been carjacked Sunday, June 4, in Forest Park. The vehicle the minors were driving — a maroon Nissan Murano — also was connected to a carjacking Sunday night in Forest Park that led to a 42-mile, high-speed chase that went as far as the Indiana Skyway before finally ending in Chicago, Forest Park police told Patch on Tuesday. The boys were expected in juvenile court Wednesday.

Monday's incident was one of four shootings since Friday, June 2, in which suspects opened fire on on-duty Chicago police officers:

  • Tuesday, June 6: Police were shot at just before midnight, hitting a civilian vehicle. Officers returned fire, critically wounding two suspects, police said.
  • Saturday, June 3: Dashonn Maggette, 31, was shot and wounded after he allegedly shot an officer in the hand while the two were tussling.
  • Friday, June 2: Officers shot and killed Corsean Lewis, 17, while responding to a call concerning a man with a gun in the Washington Park neighborhood. Lewis allegedly opened fire on the officers' patrol car.

On May 12, Chicago police returned fire after being shot at while interrupting an alleged West Side drug deal. Deangela Eaton, 25, was wounded after she opened fire on two officers, hitting one of them in the chest. The officer was wearing a bulletproof vest, which has been credited with saving his life.

On-duty officers also have been in five police-involved shootings in nearly a month. Along with the previously mentioned incidents, an officer shot and wounded a driver who allegedly rammed him with his car May 24, pinning him against another vehicle as he tried to flee police on the West Side.
