CHICAGO – An off-duty Chicago police officer shot a would-be robber Wednesday afternoon as the officer tried to intervene in a robbery in the city's Roseland neighborhood, police said.

At 12:53 p.m., the off-duty officer interrupted an apparent robbery in the 1300 block of West 90th Street. Police said the officer announced her office, and produced her weapon as she tried to intervene. The officer and suspect struggled over the officer’s gun, according to CPD News Affairs.

The suspect was transported in serious condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. The Chicago police officer was transported to a nearby hospital for observation. Details are still being sorted out, including the suspect’s gender.

The specifics of the incident, including the comprehensive use of force, are being investigated by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability with the full cooperation of the Chicago Police Department. The officer involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for a period of 30 days.
