Videos Show How Fatal Shooting of Armed Man by Chicago Cops Unfolded

The city agency investigating the November incident released the footage Wednesday.

CHICAGO, IL — Video footage of Chicago police fatally shooting a man after he fired a two other men in the West Englewood neighborhood late last year was relased Wednesday by the city agency investigating the incident.

The videos from outdoor surveillance cameras depict the immediate events of Nov. 18 leading up to and following Darius Jones, 26, being shot and killed outside of a shop near West 69th Street and Damen Avenue.

According to police at the time, officers were on a routine patrol at about 11:49 p.m. in the 2000 block of West 69th Street when they saw Jones firing at a 26-year-old man. Jones was ordered to drop his weapon, but he continued shooting at the victim, police said. Officers then open fire, hitting and killing Jones.

In the following video, Jones is seen bursting backward through the store's front entrance with two other men who appear to be shoving him out the door (starts at about video's 8:00 mark). The three men stumble into the street, and one of the men, who is dressed in white pants, wraps up Jones in his arms from behind, lifting him off his feet.

While in the air, Jones pulls out a handgun, and the man releases him in the middle of the street. That's when Jones starts shooting at the two men, who run back toward the shop as they try to avoid the gunfire.

Jones stops firing after multiple shots and finishes crossing to the other side of the street. He stops as he reaches the curb, then lurches and falls face first onto the sidewalk after being shot by officers who are off-camera.

An officer eventually is seen walking into frame — gun drawn — as he approaches the 26-year-old man wounded by Jones. The victim stands and raises his hands before collapsing to the sidewalk, apparently from his injuries. He was taken to and treated at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

A second video from a camera aimed at the street captures what happened when police arrived at the scene. In this footage, officers are seen pulling up to the scene in a police SUV as Jones is firing on the two men (starts at about video's 4:50 mark). The vehicle stops, and the officers exit but stay behind the SUV's doors, using them as potential shields.

Jones' back is to police when they drive up and he is shooting. When he turns around and advances in direction of the officers, his gun pointed down, he is shot. The video does not have audio, so it can't be heard if officers ordered Jones to drop his weapon.

The Independent Police Review Authority, which released the videos, is still investigating the shooting. The officers were placed on routine administrative duties for 30 days as part of police policy.
