The district serves 12,795 students, giving Springfield a lower student‑to‑administrator ratio than the state overall, even as Illinois continues to grapple with educator and administrator shortages. 
2. Springfield teen arrested after hit-and-run, lying to police (capitolcitynow.com) — A 19-year-old Springfield man is accused of hitting a woman with his SUV on East Indiana Avenue, leaving her critically injured, then lying to police about a phantom driver. Investigators say witnesses later identified him as the driver, leading to charges, jail booking, and a scheduled September 21 trial call that residents may want to follow.
3. Deputy convicted of killing Sonya Massey dies in first year of sentence (bigcountrynewsconnection.com) — A former Sangamon County sheriff's deputy who fatally shot Springfield resident Sonya Massey in her home has died in prison less than a year into his 20-year sentence. Family representatives in Springfield say the news brings them relief, following a $10 million settlement and new state hiring rules for police prompted by Massey's killing.
4. The importance, and emotion, of organ donation (capitolcitynow.com) — Springfield Memorial Hospital is urging local residents to register as organ donors, even if they worry their organs aren't perfect. Staff explain how living and deceased donations work, the medical and psychological screening involved, and the emotional impact for both donors and recipients as organ need continues to grow nationwide.
5. Reaves draws crowd's ire, Boschele's anger to win ARCA Allen Crowe 100 (sj-r.com) — Race fans at the Illinois State Fairgrounds' Springfield Mile saw 16‑year‑old Max Reaves win the ARCA Allen Crowe/Calypso 100 amid boos after late contact sent rival Gavan Boschele spinning. Springfield driver Kelly Kovski, 45, finished seventh and says this was his final ARCA start in his hometown before retiring after one last race at Du Quoin.
