ST. CHARLES, IL — Officials in St. Charles are considering plans to improve traffic flow and safety in a busy section of the city’s downtown as commuter and bicycle use continues to grow.

The city is seeking approval for a $99,245 planning contract with Civiltech Engineering to study potential improvements in the southeastern portion of downtown, according to the Daily Herald. City officials said proposed upgrades would focus on the Riverside Avenue corridor between Illinois Route 64 and the intersection of Riverside and Illinois avenues, where congestion and conflicts between drivers, pedestrians and cyclists have increased.

Officials say the effort aims to improve safety, strengthen connections to the Fox River Trail and enhance transportation through the area without removing parking or permanently closing streets, according to the article.
