The initial search for Haggerty got underway on Friday after his wife reported him missing. He never returned home after a business trip, and his vehicle was located about two hours later at the Otter Creek Wetlands parking lot, 6N850 Crane Road, according to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office press release.

A search of his car located a note that led detectives to believe that he may try to harm himself, according to a news release. A Kane County Sheriff’s Office K-9 team was deployed and led deputies to an outhouse at the Otter Creek Wetland. The track proceeded to lead deputies to the bank of the pond located on the wetland property.

During this initial search, deputies located what appeared to be two pools of human blood in the initial search area. This led to the coordinated search of the preserve and surrounding areas on Sept. 17. Detectives believe Haggerty left the preserve and was hiding in a gazebo northwest of the search area for the past several days.
