Pregnant Woman Killed in Elgin Crash

An area woman who was five months pregnant was killed Tuesday morning in a head-on crash in Elgin.
Cynthia Vega, was going to pick up her boyfriend from an overnight shift of work at about 7 a.m. when police said she drove over the centerline while westbound on Highland Avenue near Lyle Avenue and collided with a 2014 Honda Civic, which was driven by a 28-year-old Elgin woman, according to the Daily Herald.
Vega, 20, of Elgin, was taken to Presence St. Joseph’s Hospital in Elgin where she was pronounced dead, according to the Elgin Courier News. The 28-year-old woman was seriously injured and taken to Advocate Sherman Hospital.

Vega had recently found out the gender of the baby and had already picked out a name: Yaslina Noemi, the Daily Herald reports. Her boyfriend had planned to surprise Vega by purposing to her during a trip to Puerto Rico in December, according to the article.
Vega’s dog was in the car with her at the time and survived the crash, the Daily Herald reports.
