Kane County Coronavirus Cases Top 3,100; 115 Deaths

The number of people in Kane County who tested positive for the coronavirus has doubled in two weeks, according to public health data.

GENEVA, IL — More than 350 people in Kane County tested positive for the coronavirus over the weekend, taking the county’s total to 3,189, as of Monday, according to public health data. Officials on Saturday confirmed 172 new cases, the county’s second-largest spike so far, along with 93 new cases Sunday and 88 new cases Monday.

The number of coronavirus cases in Kane County has doubled in two weeks, according to data from the Illinois Department of Public Health. Aurora accounts for more than 44 percent of all new cases in the county over the past week, with 408 residents testing positive since May 5, the data shows.

Eleven people died in Kane County from the coronavirus over the weekend, bringing the county’s death toll to 115, Kane County Coroner Rob Russell announced Monday. All but 13 of those who have died in Kane County since the coronavirus outbreak began were residents of the county, the coroner’s data shows. All deaths at Kane County hospitals are included in the statistics, though not all are Kane County residents, Russell has emphasized in his weekly updates.

Thirty-one people died between May 4 and May 11, a 37 percent increase in the number of deaths recorded since March 23, when the county reported its first coronavirus death, Russell said.

Residents at long-term-care facilities account for 14 percent of all coronavirus cases and 41 percent of all coronavirus-related deaths in Kane County, according to IDPH statistics.

The coroner's office on Monday provided basic information about the 31 people who died over the past week. The coroner's office will only release the age, gender, town of residence and date of death out of respect for those who have died and their families. Only those who tested positive for the coronavirus were included in the list, according to the coroner's office.
