St. Charles Effort to Push for Hurricane Sandy Relief

The city of St. Charles and the St. Charles Park District are partnering to get the word out about a local effort to help the victims of Hurricane Sandy, the massive storm that swept over the East Coast, causing devastating damage in New York, New Jersey and Long Island.

The city and park district are asking residents to consider joining in the St. Charles Cares Hurricane Sandy Relief Effort to help victims of the recent hurricane, which caused extensive flooding, property damage and knocked out power to 5.5 million people.

Here’s the plan: Friday, Nov. 16, has been designated “a special Day of Giving in St. Charles” to encourage donations to the American Red Cross.

The St. Charles Cares flier being distributed about the effort states, “We are reaching out to our partner organizations to get the word out to their respective constituents, memberships and the general public about this relief effort.”

The effort will direct all donations to the American Red Cross:

• By phone: Call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767), Español: 1-800-257-7575, TDD operator: 1-800-220-4095.

To date, the Red Cross has dispatched almost 6,000 workers to provide 24/7 assistance operations.

As of Friday, Nov. 9, about 500,000 people remain without power, and the Red Cross has deployed 5,800 trained disaster workers so far toward the effort. As of Nov. 6, more than 3,250 displaced residents were safe and being cared for in Red Cross shelters throughout the affected area.

Donations keep relief efforts going and also help provide meals; cold weather relief items such as blankets, hats, gloves; as well as medical and mental health consultations.
