St. Charles Gears Up for Lights Out on Earth Hour
The city of St. Charles will turn off the lights from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. on March 23 as part of Earth Hour 2013.

Earth Hour 2013 is coming up March 23, and the city of St. Charles plans to play a role once again in the global effort to draw attention to the world’s environmental and sustainability issues.
In a release issued this week, the city announced that as part of Earth Hour 2013, it will turn off all nonessential lights at its offices from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 23, the designated time and date for Earth Hour 2013.
The city is encouraging all St. Charles residents and businesses to join communities, businesses and individuals around the world in this observance.

The first Earth Hour was held in 2007 in Sydney Australia, where 2.2 million residents and 2,100 businesses participated, according to Earth Hour’s history page. The event was envisioned to become a national event, but it caught national interest, and cities from around the globe began participating in the following years.
According to the city’s release, by 2012, it involved hundreds of millions of people in 152 countries around the globe.
